Tomorrow gets me higher, higher, high

It doesn't feel like the day before the start of the trimester. I haven't even printed out my timetable! My last week of holiday has mostly been spent recovering from the first week of holiday, so not much actual preparation has taken place yet. Fortunately there are a few free mornings this week which I can spend searching for my desk.

A new trimester always seems exciting until you talk to someone else about it.

I know it's a new semester, but you shouldn't let that put you "Under Pressure".

After all, someone Else didn't spend time doing their honours' project... (which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on who you talk to ... definitely bad if you talk to an Alex...)

So I should be unstressed because I know that someone else has more reason to stress than I do? Interesting logic ;)

Gold star for you, natch.

mmm ... I'm not sure that my thoughts on that matter are ones I could put into a couple of pithy paragraphs. Much better over a coffee.

In short, they revolve around whether degrees and grades are an end in themselves, or merely a means to an end, and what that end might be.

Does an honours year advance you more towards your goals than a year in the trenches at a cutting edge company? For that matter does three years for a degree advance you more than three years in a cutting edge company? Perhaps you need the bit of paper first before you can get your foot in the door and your CV past the HR department for that job. But what if circumstances arise where you don't?

And anyway, I was just trying to work a song title into a remark :-)

University study is necessarily an end in itself. If that wasn't the case, we'd all go mad with anxiety long before graduating. Add to this the fact that 90% of graduates will never use 90% of what they learned in class, and the conclusion follows.
