New gold star challenge

In the interests of fairness and venting, I now bring you an un-Googlable, skills-based challenge!

The rules:

  1. Gold Star Challenge Mk II is open for 36 hours following the time of the post.
  2. Enter the Gold Star Challenge by commenting on an eligible post within this timeframe.
    1. Eligible posts are as described in point 5.
  3. Every entry must give the song title in such a way that it is clearly and obviously meant to be the song title. (So that I know it's an entry, not just some random comment.)
  4. You then have a choice of:
    1. Explain why you hate the song, in 100 words or less;
    2. Give a sentence which uses some other line from the same song in the most interesting manner possible.
  5. Every eligible post will be tagged with the name of the artist.
  6. The artist set is no longer restricted in any way.
  7. The judge reserves the right to disqualify entries on the basis of incorrect title or lyrics (including misspelling).
    1. The judge also reserves the right not to disqualify an entry on this basis if it is sufficiently awesome.
    2. If you disagree with your disqualification - or that of someone else - then we can have a flamewar.
  8. The judge's decision is final.
  9. Yes, this is purely for my own amusement.

If you forget the rules, you can find 'em again by clicking on the gold star picture in the sidebar.

Gold star winners this month

I decree that the period Dec-Feb is a month for the purposes of this entry. gliderguider wins again, with four gold stars to lorne's two.

Am I the only one who finds this contest boring? The time-based part of it, coupled with whatever Bruce is doing with his reload button, makes it more or less completely pointless. Shall I give it up, or shall we switch to a more interesting (but possibly less widely attempted) skill-based challenge instead?

Gold star poll result

The poll is concluded and here are the results, complete with screwy Blogger-calculated percentages:

Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin should be it, then - but note that I never said I would abide by the poll results. Led Zep are actually a really terrible source of post titles because most of their lyrics have a single clear meaning, so they can't be twisted to a given purpose the way Queen lyrics can. Pink Floyd are a little better, but some imagination may still have to be used.

I hereby declare, then, that the Gold Star challenge is extended to include lyrics from Pink Floyd and System of a Down, starting today. Each post which uses lyrics will be labelled with the name of the artist; the challenge is still to name the song. [This gives a bit of an edge to non-RSS users, because I understand that labels aren't part of the feed.]

The attraction of SoaD is that they're so darn surreal that I could use any of their lyrics, anytime, to mean almost anything. The catch is that they're a bit edgy, so they tend to be tricky to Google for. Me getting the words wrong occasionally will just add to the excitement ;)

Gold star summary for August

lorne wins this month, scoring 15 stars to gliderguider's 6.

As this is getting rather repetitive - and also in hopes of encouraging the three or four of my readers who don't comment to do so - I'd like to extend the gold star challenge to include a few more artists. The poll in the sidebar will be open until September 11. Please let me know your thoughts on this [especially those of you who don't comment - I know who you are ;)].
